ARAN HISTORY

Democracy in the Middle Age.-



The Aran Valley is located on the north face of Pyrenees in Spain.

For many centuries the Araneses have reap the benefits of being able of deciding their activities.

The Kings of Aragon, and later of Spain, granted several rights and privileges to the araneses, one of the most important been: "Era Querimonia" (1313).

The Aranese political system, discribed as "a small republic" by several authors, is better understood from the own system´s necessity of managing and employing profitably for the common good the water, forest, and pastures.

The rights and privileges and the political organization were kept until 1834, with the implantation of the province organization.

The old organization was established on the basis of houses: each individual had to belong to one house. All the head of each houses meet in teh Conselh dera Vila (Villa Council) where discussed matters of common importance and the organization of the community.

The villages were grouped in terçons, each one of them had a council constituted by representatives of the villages thet formed it. Each Tercon cose its own advisers (conselhers) thus, forming the Conselh Generau d´Aran (General Council of Aran), the highest governement and political representative institución.

Even though the Pyrenees have been populated since remotes times, the firts known remains of humane presence in the Aran Valley date from Bronze Age (1500 a 1200 B.C).

The gascon-aranes a branch of the occitan is the language that is normaly speak by the habitants of the valley today. Gascon resulted from an evolved form of spoken Latin during the first centuries of the Middle Ages.

The Aranes language is a variaton of Gascon language. Gascon is spoken within the limits, say of a geographical “triangle circunscribe by the Pyrenees, The Atlantic ocean, and the Garona river.
